Kim Allen Smothermon
Kim Smothermon passed away the morning of Sept. 2, 2010 after a battle with cancer. Born April 20th 1956 to A.W. Smothermon Jr and Lela Mac (Boykin) Smothermon. Kim graduated from Childress High School in 1975. Kim attended College at West Texas University in Canyon then moved to the Dallas area where he lived and worked as an electrician until his death. Kim was preceded in death by his mother Lela Mae, one brother Billy Don and One great nephew Rickey Lee Cummins. Kim is survived by his father A.W. Smothermon Jr.; one sister Robbie Cummins and her husband Rick; two nieces Keeley Mullin and husband Paul, of Lubbock and Tracee Cummins of Childress; three great nephews Parker Mullin and Layne Mullin of Lubbock and Ethan Cummins of Childress; severals aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at a later date. DON "BUDDY" OVERBEY Funeral services for Don "Buddy" Overbey, 76, will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at the Parkview Baptist Church with Pastor Don McFarland officiating. Burial will follow at Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. He passed away Sept. 4, 2010. Don loved to play music. He loved Bluegrass and was in a band from the time he was fifteen. Bluegrass was his passion and he played guitar in Dobro. He made a point to go to any Blugrass festival. He loved animals and all his pets. Don was preceded in death by his father and mother, Elbert and Cordie Overbey and two sisters, Dorothy Green and Jo Ann Swearingen. Survivors include his wife Maxine Overbey of Childress; two sons, Ray Overbey and wife Shelley of Abilene and Brent Overbey of Slaton. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Zach Overbey, Hali Overbey, Stephen Overbey and Janae McGregor and by one great granddaughter, Elizabeth Overbey. He is also survived by one step-son, Ricky Sherman of Ardmore, OK and two step-daughters, Shawna Sherman and Stephanie Willis of Ardmore, OK and 8 step-grandchildren and 7 great-step grandchildren. GAYLEAN “POOCHIE” RIDDELL
Funeral Services for Gaylean "Poochie" Riddell, 75, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010 at the Childress Church of Christ with Trey Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in Cee Vee Cemetery by Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home. He passed away Sept. 1, 2010. Gaylean was born on the family farm in Cee Vee on Aug. 13, 1935 to Clarence and Gladys Riddell. He was raised in Cee Vee and was a 1952 graduate of Paducah High School. He married Charlotte Carroll in Amarillo on Feb. 7, 1958. They moved from Cee Vee to Childress in 1971. He farmed all of his life until retirement. Gaylean loved going to Creede, Colorado with his family to camp and fish. He went to the same camp ground close to the Rio Grande Reservoir every year for over 60 years. He also had a lifetime love for the game of dominos. He had a great love for horse racing as well as raising race horses. Gaylean was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, Jordan Riddell and by his sister, Lorraine Farren. Survivors include his wife Charlotte Riddell of Childress; one son, Rusty Riddell and his wife Debra of Bushland; one daughter, Kristy Smith and her husband Mike of Childress. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Molly, Payton, Ashley and Katelyn and by one great granddaughter, Rileigh. RAYMOND SHACKELFORD
On Aug. 19, 2010, Raymond Shackelford passed away from natural causes. Ray was born May 31, 1916 and reared in Tell, Texas. He attended high school in Childress playing both high school football and basketball. At 6-7 and considered tall at that time, he was provided a basketball scholarship to West Texas State University. Graduating in 1939, he then moved to California and continued his basketball career playing for Bank of America in AAU competition. He lived in Burbank, Calif. for 60 years before moving to the Motion Picture and Television Fund Home in Woodland Hills, Calif., in 2007. He retired in 1978 after a 25-year career in the studio business. Two sons, Ron Shackelford, who lives in Mission Viejo, Calif., and Lynn Shackelford, who lives in Ojai, Calif., survive him. Both played college basketball, Ron at USC, Lynn at UCLA. Three grandchildren, Geoff, Tobin and Tamara, also survive him. His wife of 67 years, Louise born in Panhandle, Texas died in 2006. Tara McClain Lance Tara McClain Lance, 28, of Vernon, TX died Friday July 16, 2010 in Vernon Rosary will be said at 6:00 PM Thursday at Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 PM Friday at St. Laurence Cathedral with Father Gabriel Cardiel officiating. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel, 2800 S. Osage St. Tara was born October 5, 1981, in Amarillo, TX. She attended school in Amarillo & Childress, TX and settled in Vernon, TX in 2007. She was employed at North Texas State Hospital in Vernon. She was a member of St. Laurence Cathedral. Tara was a wonderful mother, daughter and friend. Tara enjoyed life, friends, and most of all being a Mom. She was preceded in death by her grandmother Joyce Allen, three grandfathers, Ted Allen, Neil Lucero and Herbert Buchanan and an uncle, Ted Lucero. JIMMIE V. LOWE
Master Gunnery Sergeant USMC (Ret.) Jimmie Vineyard Lowe went to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug. 9, 2010. Jim and his wife, Valerie Vitale Lowe, have raised Appaloosa horses on Vineyard Ranch for the past 13 years. Jim was born in Nederland on March 7, 1939 and grew up in Childress where he was graduated from Childress High School in 1958. He was a very talented football player playing both defensive and offensive positions for the Childress Bobcats. Jim attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock and participated in many area rodeos. He was a fearless bull-rider. During this time Jim joined the U.S. Marine Reserves and then went into active duty in 1961. He had five tours in Vietnam and was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Navy Presidential Unit Citation and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with one Bronze Palm among many other citations for his 35-year service. Jim’s parents were Jessie H. Lowe of Lubbock who died in 1969 and Theresa Scott of Childress who died in 1989. He is survived by his wife Valerie, his sons, Jimmy, Jr. and Jay; daughters Pippa and Tiffany; step-daughters Kathryn and Jennifer, grandsons Aydan and Ethan, his sisters Jeanelle and Joyce and his mother-in-law, Helen Verseput. All of his family and many friends are deeply mourning his loss including his Appaloosas and dog Lexi. Jim died from the complications of Agent Orange and combat injuries incurred during his service in Vietnam. The funeral for Jim Lowe was at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, at the Mountain View Cemetery Veterans Memorial area. A private interment will be in the Eagle Point, National Cemetery, Eagle Point, Oregon.

Graveside services for Iola Foster, 98, well be held Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Childress Cemetery. She passed away July 28, 2010 in Childress. She was born Nov. 28, 1911 in Bellville to Henry and Frances Williams Harvey. She was a woman of God who was always the same no matter when one would see her. She was known for her kindness toward others. Her most enjoyable pastime was to fish with friends. Iola was a member of New Hope Baptist Church of Childress. Richard E. Folk age 56 of Childress died on Saturday July 10, 2010 in Childress. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday July 13, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Wellington with Rev. Connie Patton of The Gospel Lighthouse in Childress and Rev. Bill Pollard officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home of Wellington. Richard was born on November 1, 1953 in Pontiac, IL. to Fred and Mary Lou Haag Folk. He was a carpenter and electrician. He attended the Pentecostal Church. He is survived by a son Jason Folk of Wellington, two step-sons Marty Webb of Hollis, Okla. and Rusty Webb of Wichita Falls, two step-daughters Tina Shell of Wellington and Ericka Vela of Guymon, Okla., father Fred Folk and wife Marie of Childress, the mother of his kids Judy Phillips of Vernon, brother Kenneth L. Folk of Colorado Springs, Colo., Sister Christine Fosdick of Guymon, three step sisters Cynthia Sullivan and Isabelle Dawson both of Childress and Eva Castillo of Wellington. He had 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son Justin Folk in 2001 and by a grandson Ty Webb.

Betty Jo Hoos, 81, passed away July 6, 2010 in Houston. She was born Aug. 26, 1928 in Tell to Earl and Mary Furr Keys. Most of her life she and husband Frank lived in Albuquerque, N.M. and Denver, Colo. Three years ago they moved to Childress to be near family. Survivors include her husband, Frank Hoos of Childress; five brothers, J.C. Joy Hines Lindsey, 85, passed away July 2, 2010. She was born Sept. 14, 1924 in Hardeman County to Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Hines. She graduated as Salutatorian from Williams High School in 1943. She married Gilbert Lindsey in 1944 and they made their home in Levelland where he was a veterinarian. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Gilbert Lindsey; two sons, Dan of Bryan and Gary of Levelland and four grandchildren. AUSTIN H. BOWES Funeral Services for Austin H. Bowes, 79, were held Wednesday July 7, 2010 at First United Methodist Church in Canyon with Rev. John McClean and Rev. Manish Shirley officiating Private family burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Dr. Mr. Bowes was born Jan. 18, 1931 in Grady County Oklahoma to Austin and Lela Mae McNeely Bowes. He graduated from Kress High School in 1949 and attended West Texas State College on a football scholarship, graduating in 1952. He married Patsy Key in 1952 in Canyon. He then received his Master’s Degree in Education in 1957 from West Texas State. Austin was a teacher and a coach in Quitaque, Kress, Spearman and Amarillo and was a farmer in Childress and Randall Counties. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Canyon and the Crusaders Sunday School Class. He was a charter member of the Buffalo Club at WTAMU. Mr. Bowes served in the Texas National Guard for 13 years during the Korean War in Company G of the 36th Division. He was preceded in death by his parents and seven sisters. Survivors include his wife, Patsy of the home, two daughters, Lynn McPherson and husband Bob of Amarillo and Ann Clark and husband Joe of Baird; his grandchildren, Lisa Weiss and husband Casey, Travis McPherson and wife Rebecca, Chelsa Wilkinson and husband Jason and Jud Clark; his great-grandchildren, Hunter and Austin Weiss, Claire McPherson, Alli and Ashton Wilkinson, and several nieces and nephews. ATHENS — Services for Marka Ruth Merrell Hill, 35, of Athens, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christian Life Center in Gun Barrel City with Pastor Barry Boatwright and Sheila Weddle officiating. Graveside services and interment followed Thursday at Gray Mule Cemetery in Floyd County. Marka died June 27, 2010 in Athens. She was born July 31, 1974 in Amarillo. Marka resided in Panhandle from 1983-1993, graduating from Panhandle High School in 1993 where she was a cheerleader. Following graduation, she attended Amarillo College. A six year resident of Athens, she and Ricky Hill were married April 9, 2005. They were members of Christian Life Center in Gun Barrel City. Those preceding Marka in death include grandparents Robert A. and Evelyn Merrell; grandfather Papa Buddy Buske. DR. ALBERT BIRD
Dr. Albert Bird, 84, of McKinney passed away June 15, 2010. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 18, 2010 at First United Methodist Church in McKinney, Texas, with Dr. Jim Palmer and Dr. Tommy Brumett officiating. Interment followed at Ridgeview Memorial Park. He was born June 15, 1926, in Wichita Falls, to Deeb Neimer and Anisa (Tawil) Bird. Albert graduated from Crowell High School. He married Ellen Saig on October 4, 1959, in Memphis, Tennessee. Albert proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Afterwards he attended the University of Texas in Austin, and graduated from Baylor Dental School. Dr. Bird practiced dentistry in Childress for years. He was an active Rotarian during his time in Childress, and also headed the Salvation Army for several years. Albert was a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of McKinney, and a member of the fellowship class. Dr. Bird is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ellen; son, Anthony Albert Bird and wife Angie of Austin, Texas; daughter, Lisa Marie Hamilton and husband Robb of McKinney; grandchildren, Barrett Albert Bird of Austin, and Morgan Marie Hamilton of McKinney; and brother, Richard Bird of Childress. MARY FULCHER
Mary George Fulcher, 83, of Wellington, Texas, went to be with her Lord and many family and friends on Tuesday, June 8, 2010. She was born in Roanoke, Alabama to Leonard and Lurlene Vineyard on September 4, 1926. As a child, Mary, her sister and two cousins sang in a gospel quartet and attended all night singings throughout Georgia and Alabama, where she met and later married A.B. Earnest, Jr. They had four children who carried on their love of music. Mary’s desire was to have a singing group with her three daughters who performed in the Panhandle area as the “Gospel Tones." A.B. and Mary moved to Wellington in 1964 where he was Pastor of First Baptist Church. Mary was always involved in the church, teaching Sunday School, leading WMU, singing in the choir and helping with youth activities. A.B. preceded her in death in 1968. After A.B.’s death, Mary relocated to Alabama with her two youngest daughters to be closer to family. Mary and Albert Fulcher were married on September 14, 1969 in Roanoke, Alabama. After years of being a devoted homemaker, she felt the Lord called her to serve others at the Wellington Care Center. Mary began her ministry as a Nurse Aide and later became the Activity Director. Many memories were made in the hearts of families and residents because of the numerous fund raising events she organized. One of the many highlights each year was the Annual Valentine Waltz. She received the Community Service Award from the Wellington Chamber of Commerce in 1994. She was honored in 2006 for her 20 years of service to the RSVP program. She retired in August, 2005 after 20 years of service. Mary loved her family as it grew through the years and was always their source of strength. She had unwavering faith and was a consistent prayer warrior for her family. Her grandfather told her as a child that her name should have been spelled “Merry” and often quoted her Proverbs 15:13—“a merry heart doeth good like a medicine." Her favorite scripture was Isaiah 40:31 – “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Mary is survived by her husband of 40 years, Albert, her daughters, Ginger White of Austin, Texas, Jan Stackhouse and husband Calvin of Childress, Texas and Jenny Morris and husband Clay of Childress, Texas, her sons, Jerry Earnest and wife June of Denver, N.C., James Fulcher and wife Judy of Arlington, Texas and Lynn Fulcher and wife Patti of Canadian, Texas, 11 Grandchildren , 17 Great Grandchildren, two sisters, Etta Bennett of Hogansville, Georgia, and Sara Portwood and husband Lewis, of LaGrange, Georgia and one brother, Jim Vineyard and wife Maxine of Newnan, Georgia, numerous nieces and nephews, along with countless friends whose lives she touched. EVELYN FAY LANE Funeral services for Evelyn Fay Lane, 87, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2010 at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with Trey Morgan officiating. Burial followed in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. She was born Jan. 7, 1923 to William Andrew and Reatha May Clark Bearden in Wellington. She passed from this life June 4, 2010 in Childress. Evelyn went to school in Childress and later married Truman Woodrow Lane on Nov. 27, 1941. When she was younger, she was a clothing model and she loved it. She enjoyed fashion and pretty clothes. Evelyn loved her family and her son, Bobby Ray, very much. The three of them enjoyed traveling together. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Truman Woodrow Lane; his parents, William and Emma Sue Lane and a host of brothers and sisters. Graveside services for Doroteo Vitela Jr. were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Childress Cemetery with Dalia Medina officiating. Burial followed there under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. He passed away June 6, 2010 in Childress. He was born June 23, 1939 in Raymondville, Texas to Doroteo and Guadalupe Longoria Vitela. He worked as an electrician for Lancer Mobile Homes for 14 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Dominga Gonzales and Elizabeth Lopez. Mary Ruth Stall
Funeral services for Mary Ruth Stall, 74, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 7, 2010, at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel, with Pastor Marlin Ham of Dumas, officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Miss Stall was born September 6, 1935 in Wellington where she graduated from Wellington High School in 1955. After graduation, she moved to Dallas to study radiology. She moved to Pampa in 1958 and went to work at Columbia Medical Center as a radiology technician, receiving the Employee of the Month and Employee of the Year awards. Mary worked in the medical field for 46 years, retiring in the mid 1990’s. She was a Baptist. In her spare time, she enjoyed making crafts, painting, cooking and reading. She also helped any children who needed her, and they would call her “Aunt Mary.” She will be remembered as the best sister in the world. Survivors include a sister: Sonja Young and husband Jesse D. of Dumas; two nephews: Terry Young and wife Cynthia of Brian, and Roger Young and wife Jessica of Ft. Smith, Arkansas; three grand nieces: Sonja Young of Follett, Sabre Young of Amarillo, and Kristin Young of Ft. FRED WILKS
Funeral serves for Fred Wilks, 60, of Childress were held Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Calvary Baptist Church with Shane Kendrix and Tommy Sims officiating. Burial followed in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. He passed away Thursday, May 20, 2010 in Childress. Fred Wilks was born Jan. 13, 1950 in Childress to Robert "Burr" Milton Wilks and Pearl Pauline Moyers Wilks. He married the former Sally Jo Shipman on Aug. 13, 1971 in Childress. Sally would have to stand on the top step of the porch while Fred stood at the bottom in order for them to kiss goodnight. After 33 years of employment, he retired from the United State Postal Service. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Troy Wilks and nephew, Robert Wilks. Survivors include his wife Sally of Childress; two daughters Jolynn Darr and husband Gary of Childress and Shanon Wilks and special friend Joey Davis; four grandchildren, Kristin Torrez and husband John of Mineral Wells, Austin Lankford of Childress, Jocelynn Darr of Childress and Destinee Lankford of Childress; and one great grandchild, Haven Torrez of Mineral Wells.
